What happens after a crime?

Victims Code of Practice

All victims and witnesses of crime have certain entitlements under the Code of Practice for Victims of Crime. There are 12 specific overarching rights. Rights 1, 4 and 12 apply to all victims. The others only apply where a crime has been reported to the police. Clicking on each section below will provide more information about it.

Reporting a crime

If a crime is taking place, someone is in danger or the suspect is nearby, call 999. If it's not an emergency there are other ways to report.

During the investigation

Going to court

Not all cases go to court. If your case does, your details will be passed to a Witness Service who will help and support you.

After the trial

Restorative Justice
